Empty sidewalks, busy roads in NYC as virus looms

(23 Mar 2020) Driving through iconic New York City reveals empty sidewalks but busy roads as drivers make their way Monday around a rainy, misty city.
Efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus have completely altered the usual New Yorker way of life, grinding the “city that never sleeps” to a halt in the last week after it became one of the nation’s epicenters for the fast-spreading virus.
The impact on the usually bustling city is visible throughout Manhattan.
A row of Broadway theaters were still illuminated even though they are shuttered until mid-April.
A desolate Times Square is still lit up with no one on the streets.
Traffic looked normal on the Williamsburg Bridge and the FDR Drive as cars rushed passed.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a new state order Sunday requiring all nonessential employees to stay home.
Nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size or for any reason have also been canceled or postponed.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover.
